Spaced Repetition
Your brain forgets new information fast unless it’s revisited at increasing intervals — a day later, then three days, then a week, then two weeks. Apps that use spaced-repetition algorithms will queue cards automatically, but a simple paper calendar works too: review new material on day 1, day 3, day 7, and day 21. The Feynman Technique
Pick a concept, then explain it out loud in the simplest language possible, as if you were teaching a curious 12-year-old. The moment you stumble, use jargon you can’t unpack, or go quiet — that’s exactly where your understanding is thin. Go back to your source material, patch the gap, and explain it again. This technique is brutally good at exposing the difference between “I recognize this” and “I actually understand this,” which is precisely the gap that trips people up on exams.
Mind Mapping
Start with a core topic in the center of a page and branch outward into subtopics, causes, examples, and connections, using colour and short keywords rather than full sentences. Mind maps mirror how your brain naturally stores associative information, which makes them especially useful for subjects with lots of interlinked ideas — history, biology, and essay planning all benefit. The physical act of drawing the branches also engages spatial memory, giving you a second retrieval path besides plain text.
SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review)
Before reading a chapter, Survey its headings and summaries to get the shape of it. Turn each heading into a Question you expect the text to answer. Read actively to answer those questions. Recite the answers in your own words without looking. Then Review the material a day later. SQ3R turns passive reading into a structured hunt for answers, which keeps your attention anchored and gives you a built-in recall step you’d otherwise skip.
Interleaving
Instead of drilling one topic for an entire session (blocked practice), mix related topics or problem types within the same session — a bit of algebra, then geometry, then algebra again. Cornell Note-Taking

Dual Coding
Pair words with visuals — a timeline next to a history summary, a labelled diagram next to a biology process, a flowchart next to an algorithm. Your brain stores verbal and visual information through separate channels, so combining them gives you two routes back to the same memory instead of one. It doesn’t need to be artistic; rough sketches, arrows, and simple diagrams work just as well as polished graphics, as long as they force you to translate words into structure.
Practice Testing
Simulate the real exam as closely as possible: timed conditions, no notes, past papers or self-written questions.
